Keyboarding for the Christian School, Elementary Version by Leanne Beitel is an introduction to touch-typing for K-5th grade. This eBook can be paired with another typing curriculum or can be used alone. It is written directly and simply to the student. The eBook would need to be printed and set on a stand near the computer for the child to practice. The lessons are very brief, but include great photographs and graphics. Parents or children can evaluate the work for errors and a timed writing scale is included.
The wonderful thing about Keyboarding for the Christian School is the use of scripture throughout the lessons. Students will learn typing skills and God’s word simultaneously.
The curriculum does claim that it can be used independently, but parents may find the need to create more practice pages for the introductory lessons. For example, in Lesson 1, “f” and “j” are practiced in sets of three, written ten times each, for a total of six, short lines. This was not enough for my 4th grade child to learn “f” is typed with the left hand and “j” with the right hand. However, another option is to add a fun computer game to aid memorization. The font may be too small for some students. The instructions are typed in a larger or different font than the practice drill. At times, my child had difficulty recognizing the letters in the drill. The lack of page numbers can add to frustration so I recommend placing the sheets into a notebook or having them bound.
Keyboarding for the Christian School, Elementary Version is a good alternative to the secular typing programs available and could be utilized by homeschoolers. There is a separate teacher’s guide, Teaching Tools, available to purchase. This guide includes links, quiz suggestions, and evaluations tools. Please see the related review for more specific information.
