Handoff: The Only Way to Win the Race of Life is the kind of book that should be required reading for anyone working with people, especially young people. By turns inspiring and convicting, the book challenges you to "win the race of life" by "passing the baton."
The author begins with a sobering examination of the current crisis in our society, a sort of perpetual adolescent scenario, a mixture of the Me Generation and Peter Pan's defiant attitude "I won't grow up!" What happened to the leaders, the role models; what was the quality that made previous generations stand out in time of crisis: war, economic troubles, natural disaster, etc.?
What follows is a challenge, a call to meaningful life, a great part of which is a deliberate investment in the lives around you, especially the lives of children and youth.
The book is packed with practical advice, illuminated with fact and anecdote. It makes for engrossing reading, especially if you want to learn more about effective mentoring and discipleship. Chapters are short, but there's a lot to think about in the reading.
