Baseball has been around about as long as the United States. Just like our country, baseball has changed with the times.
Each chapter covers a period of time and collection of logically placed information:
Chapter 1 Introduction, an overview
Chapter 2 1850-1875
Chapter 3 1875-1900
Chapter 4 1900-1925
Chapter 5 1925-1950
Chapter 6 1950-1975
Chapter 7 1975-2009
Chapter 1 looks at the origins of baseball, compares baseball with the English game of cricket and provides resource information to allow the student to explore their interest.
The Civil War’s impact on baseball shaped the game and regional attitudes toward it. During this historical period the game and its playing position became codified.
As immigrant populations wanting to become American flowed through Ellis Island, they moved right on to the baseball field or at least were introduced to the sport as part of enculturation. Specialized equipment including the Louisville Slugger evolved.
Negro Leagues provided African Americans with a completely separate Baseball League. Negro players were as good or superior to the white players but were separated because baseball reflected societal norms. It was a loss to the game until in the 1950s baseball became integrated.
During WWII, many male players became soldiers in the fight against Germany and Japan, so women stepped up to the plate. While the men were away, the National Women’s Baseball League travelled around the country, playing just as hard as the men but in skirts! These women were phenomenal athletes.
Baseball spread around the world beginning with Cuba and expanding throughout Central America and South America and to Japan. Baseball-mania around the world has resulted in some very highly skilled international players. Some of the most intense baseball can be seen watching Japanese Little League teams play in championship games.
